Hawaii Series: in memory of my brother, artist Gary Reed of Hawaii
http://www.garyreedart.com

My brother's last painting was of this view of Ka'ena Point.  I visited the site and discovered the exact view, including the rainbow my brother depicted. This is my reply to his final work, called THE PROMISE. The Byodo-In Temple has several black swans.  I had never seen black swans before, and loved the contrast of the red bills against the dark feathers.  Gary liked this lesser known vantage point to one of Hawaii's most recognized landmarks--Chinaman's Hat. My first painting of the Waianae coast at sunset, and it will not be the last..... My brother's gardens included Bird of Paradise flowers, which attract small green geckos. One of Gary's hobbies was growing trees, including this mango tree.  This painting is really about Gary's passion for botanicals.  Another of the swans in the pool of Byodo-In Temple, a place of breathtaking beauty and tranquility. The coast along Waianae displays spectacular colors at sunset.  Grief is such a demanding process, and for 2 months I could not lift a brush.  This painting is small and simple, but represented a big step.    The younger of my two brothers likes to hang about in Waikiki on his visits to Oahu, so I painted this as homage to John.

Another of the trees Gary grew was the Plumeria, which comes in several colors.  This white and yellow one was especially beautiful.  The gecko also liked it.  The mists above the mountains at Waiahole are magical and mysterious.  The rusty crest of the juvenile becomes bright red in the mature birds.  They are not shy and will come very close.
